US SEC Considering Innovation Exemption For DeFi

The US Securities and Exchange Commission is considering an “innovation exemption” to encourage the development of onchain products and services, according to SEC chair Paul Atkins. These exemptions would provide relief from certain regulatory requirements to foster innovation in emerging tech sectors. Atkins hopes this will help make America the “crypto capital of the planet.” The SEC’s Crypto Task Force is working on establishing a workable framework for the agency, with Atkins stating that the agency will shift toward notice-and-comment rulemaking to refine its crypto policies. Atkins criticized the previous administration under former SEC Chair Gary Gensler for creating policy through lawsuits rather than rulemaking. Since Gensler’s resignation, the SEC has taken a different approach to crypto, dismissing enforcement actions against crypto firms and releasing guidance on staking activities and federal securities laws.
