Qualcomm strengthens AI portfolio with $2.4 billion Alphawave deal

U.S. chipmaker Qualcomm has agreed to acquire British semiconductor company Alphawave for $2.4 billion to expand into the AI data center market, leading to a surge in Alphawave’s shares by more than 22%. Qualcomm aims to diversify its offerings and reduce dependence on smartphone chips by catering to industries like data centers and personal computers. Alphawave shareholders will receive a 96% premium per share, with Qualcomm’s stock rising 4% post-announcement. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2026, after Alphawave exited its Chinese joint venture. Arm, owned by SoftBank, had also considered acquiring Alphawave but chose not to pursue the takeover.
