Renewable energy developer Sonnedix has secured a deal to provide 420 gigawatt hours of renewable energy per year to Spanish rail network operator, Renfe. This follows the inauguration of Sonnedix’s 150MW Covatillas 1, 5, and 6 portfolio in Spain’s municipalities of Minglanilla, Graja de Iniesta, and Puebla de Salvador.

Sonnedix will supply a portion of its output to Renfe, helping the national rail operator meet a significant portion of its energy requirements and sustainability goals. Renfe’s economic and financial general director Marta Torralvo emphasized the importance of stable energy prices amidst market volatility.

The Covatillas portfolio consists of three solar PV plants generating 300,000 MWh of renewable energy annually, powering 71,000 homes and reducing over 108,000mt of CO₂ emissions. Sonnedix’s chief commercial officer highlighted the company’s expansion into battery storage and wind power to offer tailored power profiles for clients.

With a total project portfolio exceeding 11.68GW, Sonnedix has projects under construction and in development in Chile, France, Germany, Japan, and the US. In November 2024, the company launched the 150MW Betierra project in Castilla-La Mancha, contributing to its renewable energy growth worldwide.
