Starbucks to roll out Microsoft Azure OpenAI assistant for baristas

From CNBC: 2025-06-10 15:31:00

Starbucks is set to introduce a generative AI assistant in 35 locations, aiming to streamline baristas’ jobs and speed up service. The technology, called “Green Dot Assist,” was showcased at a recent event for store managers, part of Starbucks’ efforts to boost U.S. sales and enhance customer experience.

This move comes as CEO Brian Niccol pushes to slash service times to four minutes per order. The AI assistant will allow baristas to quickly access information and troubleshoot issues, making their jobs easier and more efficient. Starbucks plans to expand the platform further to automate IT tickets and offer work substitution suggestions.

While companies like Walmart and JPMorgan Chase have embraced AI assistants, there are challenges like inaccurate responses. Starbucks’ partnership with Microsoft includes measures to ensure the accuracy of information provided by the AI. Other restaurant chains like Yum Brands have also turned to AI to simplify operations and enhance customer service.

At Starbucks’ recent Leadership Experience event, new technology like advanced espresso machines and point-of-sale systems were showcased. Baristas have been quick to adapt to the new systems, which can offer personalized recommendations and streamline repeat orders. The company aims to bring a personalized touch back to its cafes with these technological advancements.
