Brazilian businessman Nelson Tanure is in talks with banks for a bid on petrochemical firm Braskem, aiming to close a deal this year. Braskem is Latin America’s largest petrochemical firm, with Novonor looking to sell its stake amid a corruption scandal. Tanure’s proposal includes reducing Novonor’s stake from 38.3% to 3.5%.

Despite Tanure’s progress, creditors view his bid with skepticism as they have their own plans for Braskem. State development bank BNDES and major banks proposed pooling shares into a private equity fund to turn the company around. BNDES President confirmed talks with Petrobras to resolve the standoff. Tanure emphasizes the importance of alignment with banks for the acquisition.

Tanure, known for investing in companies undergoing restructuring, sees a larger role for Petrobras in Braskem’s operations if the deal goes through. Petrobras declined to comment on Tanure’s offer but CEO Magda Chambriard mentioned that Braskem is a valuable asset. Tanure’s vision for Braskem includes transforming its Camaçari complex into a hub for sustainable innovation.
