Nissan supplier Marelli Corp filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US, securing $1.1 billion in financing from lenders. 80% of lenders support its restructuring, with no operational impact expected. Total debt is $4.9 billion, with 100% of secured debt to be eliminated. Marelli is a major Nissan supplier affected by the global trade war.
Lenders of the new financing will take ownership of Marelli post-Chapter 11, with assets and liabilities ranging from $1 billion to $10 billion. The bankruptcy resolves an impasse between Japanese and Senior Lenders groups. Mizuho Financial Group extended $1.64 billion in lending to Marelli, with minimal impact on earnings forecasted.
Nissan commends Marelli’s efforts to avoid operational disruption and promises supply chain monitoring. Marelli was formed in 2019 from Magneti Marelli and Calsonic Kansei merger. Fiat Chrysler sold Magneti Marelli to Calsonic Kansei for $6.66 billion. Marelli’s restructuring plan, including a buyout by Motherson Group, failed to bridge the gap between Japanese and foreign creditors.
