NFL Adds $94M in Genius Stock, Becomes Largest Shareholder

The NFL extends its deal with Genius Sports for two more years, receiving $94 million in stock. The NFL now owns nearly 8.7% of Genius Sports, making it the largest shareholder, with a total stake worth over $235 million. The deal allows Genius to sell ad inventory on NFL BetVision.

Genius granted the NFL 9.5 million warrants, 4.5 million vested immediately. The exercise price for the warrants is one penny each. Based on Genius’ stock price of $9.93, the award is worth $94.34 million. The NFL now effectively owns nearly 8.7% of Genius Sports.

The NFL’s total stake in Genius Sports is now worth more than $235 million. The league probably sold or distributed four million of its original 18.5 million warrants. The NFL has an incentive to remain under the 10% threshold to avoid additional regulatory responsibilities.

The NFL and Genius Sports originally teamed up in 2021 to offer official gambling data. The extension allows Genius to sell ad inventory on NFL BetVision. Genius broadcasted about 270 NFL games last season on BetVision. The deal expands the existing partnership between the two entities.
