Global e-commerce giant Shopify is introducing stablecoin payments in USDC on Coinbase’s Ethereum layer-2 network Base. Shopify plans to fully roll out USDC payments via Shopify Payments and Shop Pay throughout the year, offering buyer incentives like 1% cash back in local currency payouts. Coinbase’s Base blockchain is the fourth-largest network for USDC. Shopify has indirectly supported Bitcoin payments since 2013 through gateway integrations. Shopify allows merchants to integrate at least nine additional payment methods, including various crypto assets. Shopify and Coinbase previously collaborated on Meta’s stablecoin project Diem, which shut down in 2022.
