Authorities in Russia’s Republic of Buryatia found an illegal cryptocurrency mining operation inside a truck stealing electricity for a village. The setup had 95 mining rigs drawing power from a 10-kilovolt line. This is the sixth case of electricity theft for crypto mining in the region this year, causing grid disruptions.

Mining is banned in most of Buryatia from Nov. 15 to March 15 due to energy shortages, except for registered companies in certain districts. Russia has implemented bans on mining during peak energy months in regions like Dagestan and Chechnya. Irkutsk already has a full ban in place, affecting major mining companies.

A hacker group known as “Librarian Ghouls” targeted Russians in a cryptojacking campaign, compromising hundreds of devices through phishing emails. The malware disabled Windows Defender, allowing hackers to mine crypto between 1 am and 5 am to avoid detection. They stole credentials and configured miners efficiently during this time window.
