The NMLS database ensures that mortgage professionals are fully licensed and trained to assist borrowers. Launched in 2008, it requires MLOs and mortgage companies to obtain at least one state license. The database includes information on names, contact details, licenses, employment history, and any disciplinary actions. To be part of the NMLS, mortgage professionals must complete training, pass a national test, undergo a credit check, and pass an FBI background check. The 2008 SAFE Act established federal requirements for licensing and sharing information through the NMLS. Consumers can use the NMLS Consumer Access website to research mortgage professionals before buying a home or refinancing.
