BT’s chief executive, Allison Kirkby, mentioned that advances in AI could lead to deeper job cuts, on top of the 55,000 already planned. Kirkby stated that BT’s plan to cut costs by £3bn didn’t fully capitalize on AI’s potential. She emphasized the need for BT’s share price to reflect the value of Openreach, the broadband network business, rather than spinning it off. Additionally, BT is considering a takeover of TalkTalk, a struggling telecoms company with 3.2 million customers. This potential move comes after TalkTalk was taken private by Toscafund in a £1.1bn deal that added £527m in debt in 2021.
