BT Group Chief Executive Allison Kirkby mentioned that artificial intelligence could lead to more job cuts at the company, with plans to remove over 40,000 jobs and cut costs by £3 billion by 2030. Kirkby hinted at the possibility of BT being even smaller by the end of the decade.
BT previously announced job cuts of up to 55,000 by 2030, aiming for a smaller workforce and reduced costs. Kirkby also hinted at a potential spin-off of Openreach, the company’s network infrastructure business, due to undervaluation concerns.
BT responded that Openreach is not currently being considered for a spin-off, despite Kirkby’s comments. The company highlighted strong demand for fibre broadband and cost savings contributing to improved earnings and cash flow.
Resilience at Openreach helped offset revenue and profit declines in other units, with legacy voice services and handset sales declining. The company reported that strong demand for fibre broadband and cost savings boosted earnings and cash flow.
