Beaverton-based semiconductor startup AheadComputing secured $21.5 million in seed funding to develop high-performance processors based on the RISC-V architecture. Led by former Intel architects and with Jim Keller on board, the company aims to challenge x86 dominance in data centers and AI. Aiming for scalable and power-efficient CPUs, AheadComputing leverages the modular “chiplet” model for customizable designs.
AheadComputing operates as a fabless semiconductor company, focusing on architectural innovation and design execution. With Intel engineers departing to build independent ventures, the company combines advanced design experience with startup agility. The hands-on startup environment allows for faster decision-making and is seeking larger office space to accommodate growth.
The startup aims to power PCs, laptops, and data centers with its chips, potentially counting Google, Amazon, and Samsung as clients. With RISC-V emerging as a credible alternative to proprietary platforms, AheadComputing joins a small group of Oregon-based chip startups led by Intel alumni. PSU professor Christof Teuscher notes the high-risk, high-reward approach of the startup in the high-performance commercial environment.
