Australian food and dairy company Bega Group is seeking informal merger clearance from Australia’s competition watchdog for a potential acquisition of Fonterra’s Oceania business unit. Bega plans to acquire Fonterra’s operations in Oceania, including Australia, as part of Fonterra’s strategy to focus on dairy ingredients. Bega believes this acquisition would benefit the dairy industry in Australia. The company faces competition from other potential suitors, including Lactalis in France. The ACCC also received a proposal from Lactalis to acquire Fonterra’s global consumer business and dairy assets in Australia. Bega Group intends to work with Fonterra on the sale of its Oceania businesses, where it sees itself as the natural acquirer. The company, based in Bega town, New South Wales, has a diverse portfolio of brands such as Vegemite and Dairy Farmers. In February, Bega Group reported a 3% increase in revenue to A$1.8bn, with a surge in net profit after tax to A$35.9m.
