Nasdaq.: Microsoft ending support for Windows 10 could send 240 mln PCs to landfills – report
From Nasdaq.:
Research conducted by Canalys has revealed that approximately 240 million personal computers could be disposed of as a result of Microsoft’s plan to end support for the Windows 10 operating system. This disposal could potentially lead to a significant increase in landfill waste, with an estimated 480 million kilograms of electronic waste being generated. Although many of these computers could remain functional for years after the end of OS support, demand for devices without security updates may be low. Microsoft has announced a plan to provide security updates for Windows 10 devices until October 2028 for a yet unknown annual price. However, it is warned that the pricing structure for extended Windows 10 support may lead to migrating to newer PCs being more cost-effective, resulting in the disposal of older PCs. Microsoft’s aim to discontinue support for Windows 10 by October 2025 in favor of the next generation of the OS, which is expected to boost the sluggish PC market with advanced AI technology. The article also highlighted the potential environmental impact of the disposal of Windows 11-incompatible devices and discussed the recycling of hard drives and batteries to recover materials for sustainable technologies such as electric vehicle motors and renewable power generation.
