A Netherlands court upheld a ruling that Apple abused its dominant position by imposing unfair conditions on dating app providers in its App Store. Apple faces a €50m fine for violating EU antitrust laws. The company plans to appeal, citing benefits for developers and user privacy.
EU regulators may issue new charges to Apple under the Digital Markets Act for alleged violations related to payment options outside the App Store. Failure to comply could result in fines up to 5% of Apple’s daily global revenue. Apple seeks to avoid escalation by addressing concerns raised by the European Commission.
In 2024, Apple faced a €1.8bn fine for restricting music-streaming competitors and was ordered to pay Ireland €13bn in back taxes. Other tech giants like Google and Amazon have also faced fines, while Microsoft’s Teams software is under investigation for abuse of dominance. EU regulators have ample power to enforce compliance.
