Implenia has secured a contract with SKB to construct a deep underground repository for radioactive waste near the Forsmark nuclear plant in Sweden. The project includes various underground structures like tunnels and shafts, with work expected to start in 2025 and finish by 2033, costing hundreds of million Swiss francs.

The contract demonstrates Implenia’s expertise in large infrastructure projects, particularly in tunneling and energy infrastructure. SKB CEO Stefan Engdahl highlighted the importance of safely disposing of radioactive waste and the collaboration with Implenia due to their experience in rock excavation and infrastructure projects.

This new contract follows Implenia’s recent agreement for a section of the Nordmainische S-Bahn in Frankfurt, Germany. The company’s civil engineering division head, Erwin Scherer, expressed pride in winning the contract and emphasized the need for geological and technical expertise in executing the project.
