HOCHTIEF and IONOS Group have submitted an expression of interest to the European Commission to build an AI Gigafactory in Europe. The project aims to have over 50,000 GPUs initially, with plans to scale up to 100,000. The EU plans to invest €20bn in five AI Gigafactories, with operations expected to start by 2027.
HOCHTIEF, a data center development company, and IONOS Group, a cloud infrastructure provider, are partnering to construct and operate the AI Gigafactory. The project will utilize the latest GPU technology and align with European standards to enhance the region’s AI capabilities. The consortium includes various technology and security companies, with financing through equity, partnerships, debt, and EU funding.
The consortium led by HOCHTIEF and IONOS Group has expertise in sustainable data center solutions and GDPR-compliant cloud infrastructure operation. The AI Gigafactory project will involve a range of partners, including technology, utility, and security companies, as well as research institutions. Operations are expected to begin by 2027, pending approval from the European Commission.
