Australia-based Woodside Energy has sold a 40% stake in its Louisiana LNG project to Stonepeak, a global investment firm, for $5.7bn. This strategic move aims to enhance project economics and accelerate development, with Stonepeak committing to cover 75% of costs in 2025 and 2026.
Stonepeak’s Senior Managing Director expressed excitement over the addition of Louisiana LNG to the US LNG export landscape. Woodside CEO Meg O’Neill highlighted the partnership with Stonepeak as crucial for achieving a successful final investment decision, boosting shareholder returns and project profitability.
The sale agreement, initially announced in April 2025, has now been finalized with Stonepeak’s capital contribution. Woodside has received a closing payment of around $1.9bn, reflecting Stonepeak’s share of capital expenditure since January 2025. Interest from potential partners in Louisiana LNG remains strong.
Situated near Lake Charles, Louisiana LNG has a permitted capacity of 27.6 million tonnes per annum across five trains. Woodside’s collaboration with Stonepeak and recent agreements with JERA signal the project’s progress towards becoming a key player in the global LNG market.
