Louis Dreyfus partners with Indiana port to boost grain exports, providing global market access.

Indiana’s state ports agency partners with Louis Dreyfus Company to revitalize grain exports at Lake Michigan port. LDC, a global agri-business, reported $50.6 billion in net sales in 2024. The Burns Harbor grain terminal has facilitated over 500 million bushels of corn and soybeans exports since 1979.
The partnership aims to provide global market access for regional farmers. Dreyfus operates the largest U.S. soybean crushing and biodiesel plant in Claypool, Ind. Ports of Indiana CEO Jody Peacock highlights the strategic importance of Burns Harbor in accessing global markets.
The port’s grain operation boasts storage for 7.2 million bushels, 200 railcars, and 20 barges. In 2024, Port of South Louisiana handled over 50% of U.S. grain exports, including 40 million tons of soybeans. Northern Indiana hosts the largest U.S. port with access to the Great Lakes and 16 railroads in the Chicago market.
Regional Rail operates Burns Harbor Railroad, connecting to the national rail network via Norfolk Southern. The terminal can load up to 90,000 bushels per hour onto vessels and unload 30,000 bushels per hour from trains. Dreyfus plans to begin operating the terminal in early 2026, expanding market access for regional farmers.
