SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son aims to make the company a leading platform provider for artificial super intelligence within 10 years, comparable to tech giants like Microsoft and Google. Recent AI-related deals include acquiring Ampere for $6.5 billion and investing up to $40 billion in OpenAI. Son expressed regret for not investing in OpenAI sooner, now totaling $32 billion in investments. The company previously owned 5% of Nvidia before selling the stake in 2019. Son’s recent spending spree follows years of retrenchment after tech startup crashes, but the listing of chip designer Arm in 2023 boosted assets. SoftBank raised $4.8 billion from selling T-Mobile shares in June.
