Apple has updated its app store policies in the EU to comply with digital competition regulations, following a 500 million euro fine in April. Changes allow app makers to direct users to cheaper options outside the App Store, with a two-tier fee system for alternative payments. Apple plans to appeal.
The European Commission will assess Apple’s new business terms for compliance with the Digital Markets Act, which aims to regulate big tech companies. The Act requires developers to inform customers of cheaper purchasing options and direct them to those offers. Apple’s previous restrictions had faced opposition from companies like Spotify.
Apple’s changes come after being penalized for preventing app makers from pointing users to cheaper options outside its App Store. The California company will now allow developers to guide users to better deals on digital products and alternative payment options outside of Apple’s platform. Apple plans to appeal the Commission’s decision.
