Authors call on publishers to limit their use of AI

Authors such as Lauren Groff and Lev Grossman are calling on book publishers to limit their use of AI tools, arguing that authors’ work is being “stolen” by AI companies. The authors want publishers to pledge not to release books created by machines and to not replace human staff with AI.
Over 1,100 signatures were added to the open letter in the 24 hours after it was published, showing widespread support for the call to limit the use of AI tools in publishing. Authors are also suing tech companies for using their books to train AI models, but federal judges have dealt significant blows to these lawsuits.
