The American Battery Technology Company’s Tonopah Flats lithium facility has been selected as a transparency priority project by the US Federal Permitting Council, fast-tracking federal permitting in Nevada. The project, with one of the largest claystone resource deposits in the US, aims to meet the demand for lithium in high-tech applications.

ABTC’s project secured a $58m grant for initial construction and is in line to receive $900m in financing from the Export-Import Bank of the United States for expansion. The company’s alignment with US initiatives and strategic efforts aim to counter China’s dominance in critical mineral manufacturing.

ABTC’s successful production of battery-grade lithium hydroxide from claystone paves the way for a commercial-scale refinery partnership, targeting 30,000 tonnes annually. Innovating low-cost, low-impact extraction technologies from claystone in Nevada aims to boost domestic battery-grade lithium production, lacking in traditional sources in the US.
