Mixed close on Wall Street with Dow up 0.9%, Nasdaq down 0.8%; Senate clears tax bill

Wall Street closed mixed on Tuesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising 0.9% to 44,494.94. The Nasdaq Composite fell 0.8% to 20,202.89, led by Strategy Inc. (MSTR) dropping 7.7%. The S&P 500 ended down 0.1% at 6,198.01. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) was up 0.1% to 16.83. President Trump’s mega tax and spending bill was cleared by the U.S. Senate with a narrow majority. The bill is projected to add over $3 trillion to the federal deficit over the next decade, amidst a $36.2 trillion fiscal deficit. Economic data showed an increase in job openings and a slight improvement in the manufacturing purchasing managers’ index for June. Construction spending in May decreased by 0.3%.
