fortune: Animal therapy: Amputee finds comfort in 3-legged cat

From fortune:

Juanita Mengel, a 67-year-old resident of Amanda, Ohio, lost her left leg after a car accident in 2006, and she has been adjusting her prosthesis to make herself and her 5-year-old cat, Lola-Pearl, feel more comfortable when their day begins. Lola-Pearl is missing her left hind leg and has become a registered therapy cat, along with Mengel, through Pet Partners, a nonprofit that connects therapy animal owners and their pets with communities in need of animal-assisted interventions. Therapy cats are not as well-researched as other therapy animals, such as dogs, but Taylor Chastain Griffin, a national director from Pet Partners, seeks to remedy this issue by studying the psychological impact of therapy cats. Lola-Pearl is not the only cat in Mengel’s life, as her motherly nature has led her to adopt seven more cats, most of which have disabilities. Mengel believes that she benefits just as much as the people she visits through the therapy work she does with Lola-Pearl.
