Anne Wojcicki’s nonprofit TTAM Research Institute will purchase 23andMe for $305 million, following a court greenlight. The sale includes the company’s DNA testing kits, research operations, and telehealth subsidiary. Wojcicki aims to continue the mission of helping people access and understand the human genome.
After a bidding war, TTAM outbid Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, securing the acquisition of 23andMe. The deal, approved by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Brian C. Walsh, marks the end of a tumultuous journey for the genetic testing company, which had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this year.
Privacy concerns about genetic data have raised questions about the acquisition. 23andMe had about 13 million customers at the time of the sale hearing. California, Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas, and Utah remain opposed to the sale due to privacy violations. California Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office expressed disappointment with the court’s approval.
TTAM affirmed its commitment to comply with 23andMe’s privacy policies and applicable laws. This includes allowing users to delete their data and opt out of research. Customers will receive two years of Experian identity theft monitoring at no cost. Wojcicki emphasized the importance of choice and transparency for individuals regarding their genetic data.
Before the acquisition closes, all 23andMe customers will receive emails detailing TTAM’s privacy commitments and instructions on data deletion or opting out of research. This move aims to reassure customers about the safety and security of their genetic information. Emails began circulating on Tuesday, with customers sharing the message online.
