Investors lose $2.5B on cryptocurrency scams and hacks in first half of 2025

Cryptocurrency hacks and scams cost investors $2.5 billion in the first half of 2025, with 144 incidents reported in the second quarter alone. Wallet compromise and phishing were the most common methods used by hackers to steal funds, according to a report by security firm Certik. Two major incidents accounted for $1.78 billion of the total losses, including a $1.5 billion theft by hackers in North Korea from Bybit.
