CTRA is a poor energy choice with historical losses in July and downward trends

Investors are reassessing portfolios after a strong Q2. Schaeffer’s list of 25 worst S&P 500 stocks for July includes Coterra Energy Inc (CTRA), a poor energy choice with a 1.5% average loss in July over the last decade and only two positive outcomes.

CTRA stock is trading at $25.19, up 0.6%, but has seen six consecutive losses, its worst quarter since Sept. 2019, and only three monthly wins in 2025. The stock also has year-to-date and year-over-year losses and is trading below key moving averages.

Options activity suggests further pressure on CTRA, with a 10-day call/put volume ratio of 12.31, higher than 93% of readings from the past year, indicating a potential unwinding of optimism in the market.
