Fortune: Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds pulls out of federal food program for kids

From Fortune:

Leaders in the state of Iowa have decided not to participate in the 2024 Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer for Children program. The program gives $40 per month to each child in a low-income family to help with food costs while school is out. State Governor Kim Reynolds cited the lack of long-term solutions and the impact on childhood obesity as reasons for the decision. Iowa also determines half of the administrative costs to be too expensive. Similarly, Nebraska will not be participating in the program and believes in solutions that do not involve welfare. A group of lawmakers in Nebraska have asked the state to reconsider, pointing to the benefit of the program for vulnerable children and the state’s economy. 18 states and territories, as well as two tribal nations, do plan to participate in the program this summer. These states have until Jan. 1 to notify the Department of Agriculture of their intent to participate.
