Tesla is set to open its first showroom in India, importing $1 million worth of cars and merchandise. The event on July 15 will mark the launch of the Tesla experience center in Mumbai’s commercial district. Despite high import tariffs, Tesla is entering the third-largest car market in the world.
Commercial records show Tesla imported vehicles, chargers, and accessories worth close to $1 million into India from China and the United States. Among the imports were six Model Y cars and Superchargers. The company is facing excess manufacturing capacity and falling sales, leading to a shift towards selling imported cars in India.
Indian Prime Minister Modi’s government has been trying to attract Tesla to build EVs locally, offering new policies. However, Tesla has expressed disinterest in manufacturing in India at this time. Last year, Elon Musk had planned a visit to India to announce a multi-billion dollar investment, but the trip was cancelled.
U.S. President Trump has raised concerns about Tesla building a factory in India to avoid tariffs, calling it unfair to the U.S. Tesla has already started hiring for various positions in India, including store managers, sales executives, and supply chain engineers for its autopilot ambitions.
