Pennsylvania saw a dramatic increase in deaths of older adults following an abuse or neglect complaint in recent years, surging from 120 in 2017 to almost 1,400 in 2022 according to state data. Contributing factors like a growing older population, increased complaints, and the pandemic’s impact were cited by Pennsylvania’s Department of Aging. However, some county agencies wouldn’t address the issue at all. Other states experienced similar rises in case closures due to death, with Illinois and Michigan experiencing a tripling of case closures due to death during the pandemic, though nowhere near Pennsylvania’s increase.
