The US Court of Appeals has overturned a $106.5m ruling against Medtronic for infringing on a heart valve replacement method patented by Colibri Heart Valve. Colibri sued Medtronic in 2020, alleging that its TAVR systems infringed on their patented method for controlled release of replacement heart valves. The lawsuit claimed Medtronic learned about the patented methods in a 2014 conference call. During the trial, Colibri dropped its assertion of ‘literal’ infringement, relying solely on the doctrine of equivalents. The court found Medtronic guilty of ‘induced infringement’, awarding Colibri $106.5m in damages, but the ruling has been overturned by the US Court of Appeals.
