FTC sues Grand Canyon Education, alleging ‘deceptive and abusive’ marketing practices

From Dow Jones & Company:

The Federal Trade Commission is suing education-services company Grand Canyon Education Inc. and Grand Canyon University for deceptive marketing about program costs and for marketing the school as a nonprofit. The university denies these allegations, and its stock dropped 6.4% in response to the lawsuit. The FTC alleges that the university has additional costs for doctoral students and pays the majority of its revenue to Grand Canyon Education. The lawsuit comes after the U.S. Department of Education fined the university $37.7 million in October for lying to students about the costs of its doctoral programs. Additionally, new regulations aim to ensure that a college degree translates into a career.
