Asian stocks closed the year with mixed results. The Shanghai Composite index rose, suggesting a potential market rebound. Japanese markets dipped, but still saw a 27% gain for the year. Australian markets ended lower as investors booked year-end profits. U.S. stocks finished narrowly mixed, with the Dow and S&P hitting new record highs. Despite initial claims for unemployment benefits and pending home sales being unchanged in November, the dollar and Treasury yields edged up from five-month lows. Oil held steady after a 3% fall on demand concerns and easing supply worries. Gold prices are set for their best year in three.
