Michael Cohen, former lawyer of Donald Trump, unknowingly submitted false AI-generated case citations to a judge. In a motion to terminate court supervision, Cohen cited fake rulings found online. Cohen declared that he researched using Google Bard since he has no access to formal legal-research sources. His lawyer, David Schwartz, did not check the validity of the citations before submission. E. Danya Perry, representing Cohen, said Cohen should not suffer any sanctions. Previously in the year, two lawyers were fined for citing false, AI-generated cases. In Cohen’s 2018 guilty plea, he did not refer to Trump by name but alluded to paying hush money to two women to influence the 2016 election. Rudy Giuliani noted there was no wrongdoing alleged against Trump in the charges against Cohen.
