Ex-Trump fixer Michael Cohen says AI created fake cases in court filing

From Nasdaq:

Former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen acknowledged in court papers that he unknowingly submitted false court case citations generated by Google Bard’s artificial intelligence. The citations were included by Cohen’s attorney in a motion to end Cohen’s supervised release early, which U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman later found to be non-existent.

Cohen stated in federal court that he was uninformed about Google Bard, a generative AI chatbot. His filing comes amid rapid concern over the regulation of generative AI programs like ChatGPT in court proceedings. Cohen is also expected to testify in the state criminal case against Trump for falsifying business records.

Cohen’s attorney and prosecutors were given until Wednesday to respond to Cohen’s filing. Courts across the country are grappling with the rapid rise of generative AI programs and two New York lawyers were previously sanctioned for submitting fictitious case citations. Cohen has been deep in legal controversies and was recently a witness in the civil fraud case against Trump.
