Want a tech job in 2024? Master language and liberal arts
From Fortune:
This season, as you update your resume, AI is changing the jobs market. Skills in coding are valuable, but AI leadership is looking to hire employees to interact with AI, rather than just code it. Matthew Candy, IBM’s global managing partner, said people with degrees in liberal arts will be in line for jobs related to AI.
With the rise of automation, people who understand nimble thinking and how to apply it could end up working with AI. Roles like ‘prompt engineers’ can command six-figure salaries and don’t rely heavily on knowledge of coding.
But Candy warned that individuals who primarily understand language and how to apply it could be in line for high-paying jobs related to employees feeding large language models (LLMs), like ChatGPT and Bard, prompts, questions, and information to train it up in human behavior and thinking.
Creative thinkers from liberal arts courses might become in demand and the roles of right-brainers offers great paying opportunities.
The demand for creative thinkers and graduates from liberal arts courses could become higher than ever as the skills required for jobs in the AI field are increasingly focused on creativity and innovation.
There has been a major proliferation of AI in the past year which has caused mass anxiety and prompted governments around the globe to push for regulations.
IBM has also indicated that they will slow hiring in certain roles due to taking on AI for many tasks.
While leaders don’t see AI as replacing jobs, it is likely that people who can’t use the technology will be replaced by those who can.
