U.S. insurance giant Allianz Life confirms a data breach where hackers stole personal information of the “majority” of its customers, financial professionals, and employees from a cloud-based CRM system in mid-July.
Allianz Life disclosed the breach in a legally required filing with Maine’s attorney general, but did not specify how many customers were affected out of its 1.4 million customers worldwide.
The company notified the FBI and stated there was “no evidence” of compromise to other systems on its network, while declining to confirm if they received any communication or attribute the breach to a specific hacking group.
Allianz Life is the latest victim in a series of data breaches affecting the insurance industry, with security researchers linking the attacks to a group known as Scattered Spider, who have targeted various sectors including technology giants in the past.
Affected individuals will be notified starting on August 1 as per Allianz’s plans outlined in the Maine filing.
