During the post-pandemic freight boom, companies announced pay increases for drivers, with Averitt raising regional driver pay to 64 cents per mile, the largest increase in the company’s history. Driver wages saw a 2.4% increase last year, down from 10.8% in 2021 and 15.5% in 2023, according to ATRI data.

While wage growth has been slow, Averitt highlighted its profit sharing plan and benefits like health insurance. The BLS reported a rise in hourly wages for non-supervisory truck transportation employees, reaching a record high of $31.11/hour. This aligns with NTI data showing more ambitious pay increases by fleets.

The increase in driver pay comes as spot linehaul rates have decreased. Shaver from NTI noted a small upward trajectory in wage growth since late 2024. Averitt spokeswoman emphasized the significance of the pay increase for regional drivers and the company’s commitment to employee compensation.
