American aircraft carrier USS Gerald Ford to exit Red Sea
From Fortune:
The USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier strike group is heading home after months of duty protecting Israel in the Eastern Mediterranean. The Ford will be replaced by the amphibious assault ship, the USS Bataan, and its accompanying warships. The incessant attacks on commercial vessels have caused companies to suspend passage through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
The USS Gerald R. Ford will head home while the USS Bataan will take its place in the Eastern Mediterranean after providing protection for Israel. The Ford was deployed to be in striking distance of Israel after Hamas’ attacks in October. The USS Bataan carries approximately 2,000 Marines from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
The USS Gerald R. Ford has been part of a two-carrier presence in the Eastern Mediterranean bracketing the Israel-Hamas war. The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower has patrolled near the Gulf of Aden, responding to attacks on commercial vessels. The Bataan and its accompanying warships are prepared to provide support for a wide range of missions.
