Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts worries about AI as ‘latest technological frontier’

From Fortune:

Chief Justice John Roberts focused on artificial intelligence in the federal courts in his annual report, emphasizing the benefits and risks of AI in the legal profession. Describing AI as the “latest technological frontier,” Roberts acknowledged that AI can help improve access to the courts for individuals with fewer resources. However, he emphasized the need for caution and humility in the use of AI.

Roberts’ report comes at a time when the ethical practices of justices on the Supreme Court have been under scrutiny. As the country enters an election year, the court may become involved in ongoing criminal cases against Trump. Roberts refrained from discussing specific cases while advocating for improved security and technological changes in the courts.

In his report, Roberts used tennis to illustrate the role of human judgment in legal determinations. He expressed wariness about the growing use of artificial intelligence in the courts, predicting that human judges will continue to play a significant role, but that judicial work will be significantly affected by AI. He emphasized that judgement calls in legal determinations differ significantly from the clear-cut decisions made by AI in tennis.
