Total household debt levels rose in the second quarter, with overall borrowing increasing by $185 billion to $18.39 trillion. Housing-related credit also increased by $131 billion to $12.94 trillion. Delinquency rates for different types of debt slightly rose to 4.4%, with student loan troubles sharply increasing. Student loan borrowing challenges continue to rise, with 10.2% of student borrowing now 90 or more days delinquent.
The New York Fed report also highlighted rising issues with Federal Housing Administration loans, with delinquency rates increasing. Researchers noted more troubled loans in Southern states and Puerto Rico. Despite some challenges, overall mortgage performance remains strong. Credit card debt rose to $1.21 trillion, while auto-loan borrowing increased to $1.66 trillion.
