A new China tariff imposed by Trump has sparked a dispute with CleanSpark, a US bitcoin mining startup, over $185 million in duties on imported mining rigs. The CBP claims some rigs were of Chinese origin, leading to penalties and charges on miners brought in between April and June 2024.

CleanSpark contests the CBP’s charge, stating its mining equipment was not from China, as evidenced by shipping paperwork and statements from its hardware supplier. The firm plans to fight the charges, joining other mining companies like IREN, who are also facing similar issues with CBP over millions in duties.

Trump’s new tariffs are adding 21% or more to the cost of importing application-specific integrated circuits needed for crypto mining. This has made it more challenging for US Bitcoin miners to shift rigs from other countries, especially those with close trade ties to China, facing tariffs as high as 40%.
