Neobank fintech Chime reported $528 million in revenue for the quarter, a 37% increase from the previous year. CEO Chris Britt emphasized that Chime is not a bank, as member deposits are FDIC insured in partner banks. The lack of physical locations is seen as a competitive advantage by CFO Matt Newcomb.
Chime currently serves 8.7 million active members, with 67% relying on Chime as their primary financial relationship. William Blair analysts recommend investing in Chime, calling it the top destination for individuals switching direct deposit relationships. However, Chime reported a net income of -$923 million for the quarter and saw a 14% drop in stock value.
Chime’s successful IPO in June set the stage for other fintechs considering going public. The company’s stock dropped by 14% in trading on Friday after the earnings report. Chime also introduced new consumer and technology products, including instant loans and an in-house processor called ChimeCore. In May 2024, Chime was ordered to pay $4.5 million in fines and remedies for delays in consumer refunds.
