In a cyberattack that raged for days from Dec. 12, Russian hackers penetrated the system of Ukrainian telecom giant Kyivstar, leaving 24 million users without services. The attack, one of the most significant since Russia’s invasion, wreaked “disastrous” destruction and aimed to gather intelligence, Ukraine’s cyber spy chief revealed in an interview. More than 4,500 cyberattacks thwarted by Ukraine’s SBU in 2023. Likely orchestrated by Russian military unit Sandworm, the attack raises a “big warning” on cybersecurity vulnerabilities to the West. Russia’s defense ministry did not respond to the comments on Vitiuk’s remarks, and Sandworm-affiliated group Solntsepyok claimed responsibility. Despite the dire impact, Ukraine’s military remained unaffected due to alternative communication protocols.
