Huawei’s HarmonyOS could soon overtake Apple’s iOS in China
From Fortune Magazine:
Huawei, previously struggling due to U.S. trade blacklists, is making a high-end phone comeback, rivaling Apple’s iPhone. Their homegrown HarmonyOS operating system is set to surpass Apple’s iOS in China this year, as per the South China Morning Post. This comes after the company originally used the Android system but began developing HarmonyOS after U.S. sanctions on the company.
Huawei is currently preparing to transition away from Android entirely and focusing on developing HarmonyOS-compatible apps. Despite U.S. sanctions, HarmonyOS has been successful, running on over 700 million devices with more than 2.2 million third-party developers creating apps for the platform.
Huawei’s Mate 60 Pro smartphone was an immediate success, selling 1.6 million handsets in its first six weeks. The company captured about 13% of China’s smartphone market in 2023, up from 7.6% in 2022. Their revenue is estimated to reach almost $100 billion, marking a considerable rebound from its recent low in 2021.
Apple, concerned about Huawei’s success, is also facing challenges in China, with new regulations requiring government licenses for all programs sold on Chinese app stores. This may force Apple to remove thousands of apps from its Chinese store once the grace period ends in March.
