Jumbo CEO Ton van Veen says shoplifters becoming more ‘sophisticated’ as losses from shoplifting exceed profits

Last year, Dutch chain Jumbo expects a €100 million ($110 million) loss from shoplifting, causing CEO Ton van Veen to call on politicians to address it. Retail theft is on the rise globally, with U.K. retailers losing £7.9 billion and U.S. stores losing $112 billion. Some attribute the issue to technological shifts and a cost of living crisis. Shoplifting incidents continue to increase across various major supermarkets, prompting Tesla CEO Elon Musk and major retailers to speak on the issue as middle-class crime becomes more of a problem. Shoplifting has become so significant in some areas that Target had to close nine stores in response to increased theft, while Walmart built a police substation in a high-crime area of Atlanta.
