Nike co-founder Phil Knight is donating $2 billion to the Oregon Health and Science University’s Knight Cancer Institute, the largest donation ever to a U.S. university or health institution. The gift aims to transform cancer treatment, research, and patient care outcomes with a focus on eradicating the disease. Phil and Penny Knight will partner with cancer research pioneer Dr. Brian Druker.
Knight’s fortune comes from his success with Nike, which he founded in 1964. Despite humble beginnings, the company went public in 1980 and became the dominant sneaker brand, partnering with top athletes. During Knight’s tenure, Nike shares soared almost 30,500%, making it the most valuable public company in athletic footwear, valued at over $110 billion.
The Knights are renowned philanthropists, with a lifetime giving estimated at $3.6 billion, including $370 million in 2024 alone. The Knight Foundation, which holds over $5 billion in assets, supports various initiatives to make a meaningful impact. Phil Knight’s memoir, “Shoe Dog,” reflects his desire to create something significant and lasting in the world.
