The US Justice Department has seized over $2.8 million in cryptocurrency, cash, and assets in a case against a ransomware operator. Ianis Aleksandrovich Antropenko faces charges of computer fraud, abuse, and money laundering. The US government has taken action against cryptocurrency to boost its national stockpile, including $1 million from BlackSuit and $2.4 million in Bitcoin seized by the Dallas FBI.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated the government won’t be buying Bitcoin for its crypto stockpile. The US government currently holds approximately $20 billion in Bitcoin from criminal cases, totaling 198,012 BTC worth over $23 billion. Bessent clarified that they will explore budget-neutral ways to acquire BTC.
